The New Girl On The Block - Maldonado Shines In First AIHL Game
November 7th, 2009, Sportsplex - Feasterville, PA
The Fire Ants minors took the floor in Feasterville looking to equal the win the Elite team had over the Winchester Generals. Just like in the Elite game, the Generals looked to be skating with a short bench however; the Ants lost most of their offense from last season and looked to rebound.
New Fire Ant signing Antoinette Maldonado started her AIHL career off on the right track. She scored the first goal of the game on her first shift and didn’t stop there also assisting on two other goals in the game as the Fire Ants minors went on to win 7-1.
Coach Furnari beamed when asked about Antoinette’s first game. “She is a great little player. Strong hands and patient with the puck in traffic. She has a bright future on this team if she keeps it up.” Antoinette comes to the Ants with a strong hockey background. In addition to playing four years of Division One college Ice hockey at Quinnipiac University, she also has been a member of several FIRS/USARS Team USA squads and has two gold medals under her belt. Her move to the Fire Ants seemed a natural one after Fire Ant Lisa Giovanelli recruited and coached her at Quinnipiac and played with her on team USA.
“Maybe someday soon you will see two females skating on our Pro/Elite team”, said coach Joe,” wouldn’t THAT be something?”
Luccio Battista got off to a solid start with a couple goals and Gilleece as well as newcomers St. Jean and Grenier scored as well. Greg Marshall picked up his first win in net.
With all the offense, Coach Furnari was most excited by his defense, “ Dan Scalamogna played very well for us in that game, he covered for the mistakes we made by pressing the offense so much.”
Rob Edmonds scored the lone goal for Winchester. Hartford is now 1-0 and Winchester 0-1.
